Evidence-Based Assessment

Tanita Body Scan — clinician-interpreted body composition analysis

What Is a Tanita Body Scan?

The Tanita MC-780MA is a medical-grade body composition analyser used extensively in clinical and research settings. It uses Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) — a validated, non-invasive technology that sends a low-level electrical current through the body to measure how different tissues resist that current.

Because muscle, fat, bone, and water conduct electricity differently, the device can accurately differentiate between tissue types — delivering a detailed picture of your internal health that a standard scale simply cannot provide. At Fortify Movement & Health, every scan is interpreted by an accredited Exercise Physiologist, so your results translate directly into a clinically informed plan.

How BIA Technology Works

During a Tanita scan, you stand on the device's footpads and hold hand grips — the process is completely painless and takes under two minutes. Eight contact points (two per hand, two per foot) allow the analyser to take multi-frequency, segmental readings across your trunk and each limb separately.

Clinician Interpretation Makes the Difference

Raw data alone has limited clinical value. What sets the Fortify Movement & Health body scan apart is the accredited Exercise Physiologist-led interpretation: your results are contextualised against normative reference ranges, your health history, and your rehabilitation or health goals — turning numbers into an actionable, evidence-based plan.

Suitable for clients across the lifespan — including those managing chronic pain, chronic disease, disability, and neurological conditions, as well as NDIS participants and DVA-funded clients seeking objective outcome measures.

What the Scan Measures

Skeletal Muscle Mass

Measures the total mass of skeletal muscle across your body — a key indicator of functional strength, rehabilitation progress, and chronic disease risk.

Body Fat Percentage

Distinguishes total fat mass from lean tissue, enabling clinically relevant insight into metabolic health beyond what weight scales provide.

Visceral Fat Rating

Quantifies fat stored around internal organs — a clinically significant marker closely linked to cardiovascular disease, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes.

Total Body Water & Hydration

Assesses intracellular and extracellular fluid balance, supporting monitoring of chronic conditions, post-surgical recovery, and exercise-related adaptation.

Segmental Body Composition

Delivers limb-by-limb and trunk data — enabling your Exercise Physiologist to identify asymmetries and guide targeted rehabilitation or strength programming.

Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)

Calculates your resting energy expenditure, informing evidence-based recommendations for nutrition, activity levels, and chronic disease management.

Why Body Composition Analysis Matters

A Tanita body scan is far more than a number on a scale. Interpreted by an accredited Exercise Physiologist, your results become a clinical tool — informing rehabilitation strategy, quantifying progress, and supporting the long-term health outcomes that matter most to you.

Track Rehabilitation Progress Objectively

Quantitative body composition data provides a reliable, evidence-based record of how your muscle mass, hydration status, and segmental strength are responding to a structured rehabilitation programme. For clients managing chronic pain, disability, or neurological conditions, seeing measurable change reinforces motivation and validates clinical decision-making.

Identify Chronic Disease Risk & Inform Exercise Prescription

Elevated visceral fat and unfavourable muscle-to-fat ratios are independently associated with metabolic and cardiovascular risk. Tanita scan data allows your accredited Exercise Physiologist to tailor exercise prescription with precision — addressing modifiable risk factors in a clinically appropriate, evidence-based manner for clients managing chronic disease.

Support NDIS & DVA Goal-Setting and Outcome Monitoring

For NDIS participants and DVA-funded clients, demonstrable functional outcomes are central to funding reviews and care planning. Serial Tanita scans create a clear, objective evidence trail — linking exercise physiology interventions to measurable improvements in body composition, which supports goal documentation and ongoing funding justification.

All Tanita body composition scans at Fortify Movement & Health — located in Altona North, VIC — are conducted and interpreted by an accredited Exercise Physiologist, ensuring results are contextualised within your individual clinical picture and rehabilitation goals.
